Has Square-Enix lost its luster?

Square Enix releases by year (click to see full size)

Back in the day of the NES, Nintendo strictly limited the number of games a publisher could release on the platform in a year. As a result, the games that came out of companies like Capcom and Konami are some the the greatest games ever. All the way to the SNES days it was possible to go to the store and pick up the new Capcom, Konami or Squaresoft game you had never heard of and be confident that it would be a good game.  How many people would have given Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger a shot if it were made by some unknown developer? Sure Chrono Trigger had an all-star team behind it, but back in the days before the wide spread use of the  internet, Sakaguchi, Toriyama and Uematsu were not well known in the west. You were probably more likely to sell a game by advertising it as programmed by  Nasir.

By the mid 90′s Square was one of the few brands left that still very selectively   released it’s games in the west. While non-rpgs like Einhander and Busihdo Blade tricked through,   the  few Square games that were released each year were almost always excellent. Xenogears and Vagrant Story didn’t need the Final Fantasy name tacked on to get attention. It was enough that the box said Square on it. Well into the early Playstation2 era, the name still carried weight.  Today, what used to be a few games a year is  a few games a month. In fact, since the merger between the two companies,  nearly half of all the games bearing the name are not developed by Square-Enix.
